Before you get that surgery or Botox injection, step back and try these steps. You may just look 10 years younger without a trip to the doctor or an expensive procedure.
Tip 1 - Use a skin cleanser.
As part one of your daily regimen, use a skin cleanser to remove the dirt and oil and allow your skin to breathe. Your skin will thank you and you will have fewer breakouts.
Choose a cleanser based on your skin type.
- Dry skin will benefit from a cleanser with low alcohol content that’s cream based.
- Sensitive skin types should look for something fragrance free.
- Oily skin is best served by a foamy cleanser or gel with a low PH level.
- Sweaty skin? For you runners and gym lovers, all that sweating means you’ll want something designed to address clogged pores.
- Wear cosmetics? Buy a makeup removing cleanser.
Tip 2 - Exfoliate.
I’m not just talking to women here; men can benefit from this too!
Your hands and neck will benefit from this treatment as well.
There are two basic types of Exfoliation. Manual and Chemical.
- Mechanical exfoliation means you use
- special brush
- exfoliating gloves
- scrub containing abrasive materials
If you use a manual exfoliating scrub, avoid the harsher scrubs that can scratch and damage skin.
Whether you use a scrub or a device, a light touch is all that’s required to remove the dead skin cells. Scrubbing hard and irritating your skin will be counterproductive.
2. Chemical exfoliation is the process in which you use a chemical peel that will chemically break down and clear away dead skin cells.
Many people find chemical exfoliators less “scratchy” than physical ones. You also gain more control over depth and uniformity.
Do research before investing in a chemical peel and spot test for skin sensitivity.
Tip 3 - Moisturize daily.
Moisturizer may very well be the most important product in your anti-wrinkle, anti-aging quest.
Dry flaky skin leads to inflammation which eventually breaks down collagen which leads to…you guessed it, wrinkles!
Besides, dry and scaly isn’t a look you really want to go for.
Tip 4 - Protect your skin from the sun.
The experts agree; there’s no such thing as a healthy tan. Sun damage leads to wrinkles.
Buy a hat. Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen when you’re out during the day. Once again, don’t neglect your hands and neck. Slather up any exposed skin to prevent damage!
Some cosmetics contain sun protection. If you wear makeup, use a foundation with an SPF rating of 8 to 15. And pick up a mineral powder containing titanium dioxide or zinc oxide with an SPF of 15 or higher.
Tip 5 - Get enough sleep.
As it turns out, “beauty rest” really is a thing!
Your body releases certain hormones during sleep which promote skin repair.
A lack of sleep also increases circles under the eyes and eye bags making you look years older!
Tip 6 - If you smoke…quit.
Smoking reduces your skin’s blood flow which accelerates aging and leaves your skin dry and discolored.
Speaking of discolored, smoking also yellows your teeth. Eww!
Smoking is never part of a healthy lifestyle. Do yourself, your friends and your family a favor: Kick the habit!
Tip 7 - Exercise.
A bit of muscle tone will help with sagging skin. It will increase your blood flow fueling your skin with oxygen and nutrients removing free radicals and giving you a healthy glow...
...and a sexy body doesn’t hurt.
Tip 8 - Stay hydrated.
It’s long been a myth that you need 8 glasses of water per day. It’s been repeated so often it has taken on an air of complete conviction by most proponents, however it’s not backed by any scientific study.
There is no real standard except this:
If you’re thirsty drink some fluid.
Avoid too much caffeine as that can have a dehydrating effect. Watch your salt intake. Avoid too much alcohol, which also causes dehydration.
- Fresh fruit
- olive oil
- leafy greens
- whole grains
...are all natural sources of vitamins, minerals and powerful antioxidants.
Antioxidants fight wrinkles and brown spots by stopping damage caused by free radicals.
Reduce animal fat in your diet which increases those nasty free radicals.
Omega-3s help skin elasticity. Stock up on omega-3 fatty acids by eating
- fatty fish
- pumpkin seeds
Tip 10 - Chill.
Relax. Take a mental vacation.
Worry lines are very real. Combat them by keeping your blood pressure low and a smile on your face.
And let’s face it; happier people are more attractive.
Stress releases cortisol which… well, we’ve already discussed this. Cortisol bad.
So, call a friend, meditate, get a massage, take a walk or pet a puppy.
